recently I got access to a lot of different Wi-Fi networks. So I wrote a very small App, that shows the Wi-Fi your main interface is connected to. Whenever you change the station the Menu Bar will show you.
The download is around 26 KiloBytes, should work on Mountain Lion onwards.
